Congratulations to McConnell Dowell Supervisor Geoffrey (Tiny) Wineera, who has been awarded one of four NZ Transport Agency Zero Harm Scholarships.

In addition to his ‘day job’ as a Painting and Coatings Supervisor in the mechanical and electrical team on the Waterview Connection Project in Auckland, Tiny also acts as a Level Two Health & Safety Representative, which involves incident investigation and reporting, creation of safety alerts, and documenting incidents, causes and solutions.

His passion for helping his colleagues work safely and go ‘Home Without Harm’ has developed over 32 years working in the construction industry across a wide range of disciplines from general construction, through electrical and mechanical installations and cranes, to civil roading and infrastructure tunnelling. He has completed a number of Safety-related courses, including the National Certificate in First Line Management (Level 3), an adult teaching course, Construction Management with Unitec Auckland, Height Safety Training and other site related courses.

He says his interest in Safety has evolved over the past 10 years, as he has gained experience and realised that “we could make it better just with a little thought and planning”.

“McConnell Dowell’s goal of “Home without harm” should be the goal of all companies who have the welfare of their most valuable assets in mind - the people,” Tiny says.

This scholarship offers further opportunity to develop his knowledge by fully funding the course and examination fees associated with an International Certificate from the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH), as well as peer mentoring and work experience.

The NZ Transport Agency Zero Harm Scholarships are open to those working in the roading construction industry, and aim to help improve workplace health and safety. Kundabung to Kempsey Pacific Highway Upgrade Traffic Switch

Roads and Maritime Services engaged McConnell Dowell OHL JV to build the Kundabung to Kempsey Pacific Highway Upgrade.

The K2K project will deliver 14 kilometres of four lane divided highway from north of Barrys Creek, near Kundabung, to the southern end of the Kempsey bypass. Major work started in November 2014 and is expected to be completed in 2017, weather permitting.

Key features of the upgrade include building twin bridges over both Smiths Creek and Pipers Creek, a new interchange at Kundabung Road and new northbound and southbound rest areas south of Mingaletta Road.

The project will deliver reduced travel times between Port Macquarie and Kempsey for motorists and improved travel safety through road design and separation of north and southbound lanes.

Progress on the construction of the new southbound lanes enabled the recent traffic switch to take place.  On the night of 14 July Pacific Highway traffic was switched onto the new carriageway between Barrys Creek and just north of the Smiths Creek Bridge (the first 4.2 kms of 14km)

The night crew worked hard to safely implement the traffic switch with a night time low temperature of 0.5°C.  Work on the night included final line marking, barrier movements, final wire rope installation and signage. During these preparations the team also successfully managed the access to three local side roads in the switch area.

The traffic switch gives the team access to start the construction on the northbound lanes which includes the completion of box culverts, demolition and rebuild of the Smiths Creek Bridge, associated earthworks and pavement.

This achievement is a significant milestone for the K2K construction team, congratulations to all involved for your perseverance and hard work to get the switch complete.

CCNZ 2016 Award trophy

McConnell Dowell’s award-winning upgrade of Meridian Energy’s Waitaki Dam in North Otago received further industry recognition on Friday night at the Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) Awards, where it won the category award for projects between NZ$1M and $10M in value.

McConnell Dowell, with URS (now AECOM) as designer, partnered with Meridian on the NZ$40M, four-year refurbishment project to repair the gradual erosion of embankments and do seismic and flood protection work around the site. Working within a brief to deliver a safe, low-risk and long-term remediation solution that did not impact on operational productivity during construction, the team took an innovative approach to the particular challenges the site presented, and provided Meridian with a long lasting design solution while mitigating numerous safety and environmental risks, and saving the client half the original budget.

Meridian was delighted with the proposed solutions, health and safety management, contract management, and technical work, saying “the work was executed to a very high standard and the finished products are excellent.”

At the same awards event, McConnell Dowell Operations Manager Joe Edwards was recognised with a CCNZ Life Membership for his services to what is now Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ). Joe served on the National Executive of CCNZ for 13 years including two years as President. He played a major part in bringing Roading New Zealand and the former NZ Contractors Federation together to create a much more united and effective contracting industry body as well as leading the CCNZ input into the drafting and review of the new Health and Safety legislation.

City Rail Link Receives Highest Sustainability Rating

The City Rail Link (CRL), which is being delivered by a McConnell Dowell and Hawkins Joint Venture, has been awarded a ‘Leading’ Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) Design rating by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA), the highest possible achievement in the IS scheme.

The rating to Auckland Transport is for the design and construction planning of Contract 2 – Albert Street tunnels and a stormwater diversion.

To award a rating, ISCA considers project performance across six themes: Management & Governance; Using Resources; Emissions, Pollution & Waste; Ecology; People & Place; and Innovation. The process the CRL has undertaken to engage and partner with Mana Whenua (the local Maori people who hold customary rights in that area) to embed cultural values into an industry recognised sustainability framework has been acknowledged as a ‘world first’ innovation.

Auckland Transport worked closely with Mana Whenua to tailor the IS tool to suit not only Auckland, but also the New Zealand cultural context. Also through this partnership with Mana Whenua, the CRL design is developing a cultural richness and sense of place, which will be carried through to the completed project.

“The sheer scale and significance of the CRL means taking a sustainable approach throughout the project lifecycle, is not an option, it just makes sense. This recognition tells us we’re on the right track to achieving our sustainability goals,” says Auckland Transport Project Director Chris Meale.

The submission to ISCA consisted of design documentation produced through the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase with AT’s Principal Technical Advisors (Aurecon with Mott MacDonald, Jasmax, Grimshaw and Arup) and delivery partner Connectus, the McConnell Dowell/Hawkins joint venture.

The City Rail Link Contract 2 package achieved a rating score of 78.7, well above the 50 points required to gain an ‘Excellent’ rating.

Sustainability underpins the entire CRL project from inception, planning and construction and through life operation. The CRL is the first public transport project in New Zealand to measure carbon emissions associated with the construction and operation of the stations and tunnels, with data on energy and water use and waste generation being collected monthly during construction.

Key CRL sustainability initiatives planned over the project lifetime include:

  • Switching from diesel generators to grid electricity during construction
  • The use of LED street-lighting for the Albert Street reinstatement
  • Collaborating with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) to promote efficient driving and monitor machinery during construction to reduce fuel use
  • Changing excavation methods to reduce diesel and water use
  • Installing tree pits in the street to collect and filter stormwater runoff.

Recognition for Going the Extra Mile

McConnell Dowell is thrilled to have received recognition from our client NZ Transport Agency for ‘Going the Extra Mile’ on two of the high profile projects we are delivering for them - the Russley Rd Upgrade in Christchurch, and the Waterview Connection in Auckland.

The Russley Rd Upgrade, being delivering in a joint venture with Downer, received the Keeping Customers Moving Award, for our innovative approach to temporary traffic management at the Memorial Roundabout. By constructing the slip roads first and linking them into one big roundabout that encircles the construction area, and supported by a comprehensive stakeholder communications strategy, the team was able to avoid 12 proposed traffic management changes throughout the construction programme. It has minimised disruption to the public, created a safer working envelope for construction and enabled the project to proceed ahead of schedule.

“Every day we’re looking for ways to live up to McConnell Dowell’s aim of ‘Creative Construction’,” says Roading Director Aidan Brannan. “The Project Team has done a sterling job of rising to the challenge of delivering a unique road feature not seen previously in New Zealand, and from which our customers benefit every day.”

Road users frequently comment that the new roundabout is more efficient than the previous one, their journey time reliability has increased and traffic disruption reduced.

The Well-Connected Alliance, the team delivering the Waterview Connection Project in Auckland also won three awards, including the Supreme Award.

The Teaming Up Award recognises ‘working with others collaboratively to achieve outstanding results’. Waterview’s has worked with the Transport Agency and educational organisations to host visits to site by more than 200 college students last year as part of a Government initiative to encourage students to consider engineering-related jobs. These visits required significant planning and support from people right across the project, and the judges said Waterview had worked with others collaboratively to achieve “outstanding results.”

For the second year running, Waterview also won the Connecting with Our Community Award, reflecting the project team’s commitment to engaging with the community beyond normal expectations. With the project area spanning five suburbs, the team has “walked with the community” in small and large ways including formation of a community design group, management of cultural impacts in partnership with key mana whenua partners, and co-designing a playground with the local school, a process which won the team the Best Practice Award from the NZ Planning Institute.

Topping off the hat-trick, the Supreme Award was open to all the successful GEM finalists and celebrated outstanding performance in Going the Extra Mile.

“This is an outstanding outcome for all of us. Our GEM success justly recognises the passion and commitment all our people and teams demonstrate on this great project of ours,” said Alliance Project Manager Iain Simmons.

“The NZ Transport Agency is one of our most valued clients, so we’re delighted with their recognition of our efforts to deliver their projects to the highest standard possible,” says Managing Director Roger McRae. “We look forward to delivering transport solutions with the Agency for many years to come.”

About the GEM Awards

The GEM (Going the Extra Mile) Awards acknowledge the NZ Transport Agency’s suppliers for their commitment to the Agency’s our priorities and quality industry standards, and are a way to exhibit outstanding examples of the diverse range of activities on the state highway network

Geotech Works Begin at Sumner Rd

Geotech Works Begin at Sumner Rd

A blessing and ceremonial planting officiated by local iwi Ngati Wheke marked the start this week of geotechnical risk mitigation works at Sumner Road in Christchurch.

Representatives from McConnell Dowell and partners Beca, Geovert and Doug Hood Mining were present to celebrate the official start to the project

Alongside Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel and the NZ Transport Agency’s Southern Regional Director Jim Harland, McConnell Dowell Operations Manager Joe Edwards and Board Member Linda Constable planted some Kowhai, Ngaio and Griselinia shrubs at the top of the bluff to mark the occasion.

The team is excited to be starting on the challenging and complex project and proud to be helping deliver such an important project for the local community. Sumner Road from Evans Pass to Lyttelton has been closed since February 2011, when the earthquake damaged the road and made area too unstable to access. The project will mitigate geohazard risks to road users and return the roading corridor between the Sumner side of the causeway and Lyttelton to its pre-quake level of service.

“We have gathered experts in a number of fields including geotechnical analysis, rope access ground engineering, drilling, blasting, earthworks and roading to prepare Sumner Road for remediation works and reopening”, says Contractor’s Representative Marianne Rogers.

“Our focus is to inspect the terrain around Sumner Road and to stabilise the rock loosened by the earthquakes safely and efficiently, securing the cliffs so work to repair Sumner Road can begin.

Works will include scaling the upper reaches of the Crater Rims Bluffs, abseiling down the cliffs and removing any rock that isn’t stable or secure. Large rocks will need be removed using controlled blasting or bolted and meshed.

A 400m long, 15m wide catchbench will be excavated directly below the Crater Rim Bluffs and above the Sumner Road to catch and prevent rockfall from reaching the road. A rock bund several metres high and 50 metres long, will also be constructed in the gully to the west of the Crater Rim Bluffs to intercept rockfall. It will be covered with basalt cobbles to reflect the basalt stone walls in the area.

Structural repairs will be completed under the existing road so it can be used as a ‘haul road’ to transport excess rock from the excavation of the bench. This is a faster and more cost effective option than constructing a separate haul road and it also makes a start on the repair work required to return the road to two-lanes.

Work to make the area around Sumner Road stable enough so it can be repaired is a critical part of the rebuild effort and one of four projects within the Sumner-Lyttelton Corridor programme.

Once the geotechnical risk mitigation work is completed, the next stage of work will begin, investigating the extent of the damage to retaining walls along the road. The road will then be repaired and reinstated. At this stage, it’s expected that the road will reopen in 2018.

Underpass Wins Concrete Award

An unusual and striking approach to a pedestrian and cycle underpass has won the Excellence in Civil Concrete Construction category at the 2016 Concrete Sustainability Awards.

The 180m long underpass, which was opened on 9 September, is part of the NZ$93m Russley Rd upgrade in Christchurch, which is being delivered by a McConnell Dowell Downer Joint Venture together with designer AECOM and sub consultants Jasmax and WAM.

It travels under the new Harewood Roundabout, aims to provide high quality active transport infrastructure and provide safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists and to the growing Christchurch International Airport precinct.

Cast by local producer Cancast using concrete moulds following a 3D CAD model, the 84 multi-faceted, concrete panels are painted in glossy white and evoke the Southern Alps. Four 1.5 – 8m wide inter-panel sections were cast in-situ using vertical rough sawn timber boards with vertical 10mm triangular grooves to contrast with the texture and form of the precast panels. These inter-panel sections are painted in the colours of the sky from west to east: West Coast sunset, stormy West Coast sky, the Nor’west arch and the broad blue Canterbury sky. Both surfaces are tactile, inviting touch; and with the paint finishes, a dynamic play of light reflectance, shadow form and colour contrast is produced.

Within the roundabout, 25 spun, 500mm diameter concrete pipes channel natural light into the underpass. They are oriented towards the sun and pierce through to the roundabout to deliver intense moments of sunlight that travel along the walls and floor as the sun moves through the sky. The pipes are painted in the same high gloss white to reflect natural light down into the underpass.

“The quality of the finished structure is truly supreme – both striking and functional,” says McConnell Dowell Downers Contractors Representative and McConnell Dowell Roading Director Aidan Brannan. “It sets a very high standard in urban transportation features for the future.”

L&D Manager Recognised by Industry

Congratulations to McConnell Dowell Learning and Development Manager Anand Naidu, who was awarded Runner Up in the Practitioner of the Year category at last night’s NZATD Awards.

Second place was a significant achievement given the huge number of entries in this category. The award acknowledged Anand’s “broad range of skills: strategy, coaching, mentoring, leadership, design skills [and] assessment.”

The judges particularly noted the significance of establishing McConnell Dowell’s in-house Private Training Enterprise - the first in the construction industry – which Anand has been responsible for implementing and running.

“We acknowledge that establishing a PTE for his employer which links to accredited training is a tremendous achievement” they said.

After just 12 months of operation, the PTE received an ‘excellent’ rating in its first NZQA Audit.

The judges were also impressed by Anand’s personal contribution to the community, for which he received a Queens Service Medal in 2013.

Anand has worked as an L&D professional for over 30 years in a variety of roles including secondary and tertiary School Teacher, Information Technology Trainer, Lecturer, Webmaster, Senior Trainer, Community Education Tutor, People Capability Manager, OD/L&D Advisor, Assessor/Moderator, Qualification Developer and L&D Manager. He actively contributes to the Learning and Development industry by delivering conference presentations, and taking an active part in a number of groups and associations.

Anand demonstrates a strong work ethic, maintains a high level of personal integrity, and focuses on relationship building and facilitating achievement though learning. He has also been instrumental in transitioning the culture within McConnell Dowell from a ‘training’ focus to one of ‘learning and development’.

“This is an outstanding achievement and deserving recognition of Anand for what he has achieved in getting our PTE to where it is today,” says New Zealand and Pacific Islands Managing Director Roger McRae. “It is also due recognition of Anand’s service to the training industry - we are proud of his achievement and standing in the industry.”
